My friend leads Junior Congregation at my shul so I went to that service instead of the main service to sort of cheer her on. One of our rabbis came down for the Torah service and I guess he heard me singing, because he came up to me at the Kiddish (not exact quotes, only what I can recall):
Rabbi: You have a very nice voice.
Me: Oh, thank you! That’s so kind of you.
Rabbi: How’s your Hebrew?
Me: Uh, it’s… OK. Actually I’m going to start working with a tutor next week on my reading and Torah trope so I can have a Bat Torah.
Rabbi: Good. Because you should be up on the bimah.
Me (on the inside): AFJDFGJDSJGOHOERNGU HOLY CRAP
Me (on the outside):Really?
Rabbi: Yes, you could lead High Holiday services, or the Torah service. We could sit down and have a meeting next week for a few minutes on what you would need to learn. But really, work on your Hebrew.
Me (on the inside): Don’t cry or puke, don’t cry or puke. Stop getting so excited and don’t forget to listen,he’s still talking!
Me (on the outside): Oh, I will! It really means a lot to me for you to say that.
Rabbi: (clinks his cup against mine)L’chaim.
